Franklin

Franklin is a charming Williamson County city located about 20 miles south of Nashville via Interstate 65. Franklin, established in 1799, was named for Benjamin Franklin. In 1864, it was the site of one of the most ferocious battles of the American Civil War. The city’s rich heritage is preserved in five distinct districts, along with landmark properties, such as the Carnton plantation and Lotz House. Franklin is also a major hub of music, culture, and the health care industry. Its thriving old-world Main Street is lined with unique stores and highly regarded restaurants.

Franklin’s real estate mix is varied: lavish multiacre estates, grand custom-built mansions, and attractive single-family homes. The homes available here range from exquisitely preserved pre-Civil War antebellum properties to beautifully designed contemporary architectural masterpieces. Convenient highway access allows many Franklin residents to commute into Nashville for work, while many others work at the numerous healthcare-related businesses and other Fortune 500 companies headquartered in the Cool Springs business district. Outstanding public and private schools make Franklin a popular destination among young families.

Franklin has several commercial areas that offer a wide selection of stores and restaurants. The 16-block Downtown Franklin historic district features a quaint collection of antique shops, fashion boutiques, art galleries, gift stores, and specialty retailers. Close to Main Street, The Factory houses restaurants and galleries within 11 renovated Depression-era industrial buildings. Cool Springs Galleria is Franklin’s largest shopping center, with 165 businesses covering over 1 million square feet of retail space. The Galleria is anchored by Belk, Dillard’s, JCPenney, and Macy’s department stores. Puckett’s Grocery is a Nashville institution combining hearty Southern meals with live music entertainment. Puckett’s has one location on Franklin’s Main Street, while its iconic original venue, famed for its open mic performances from country music’s biggest stars, is just 10 miles southwest of Franklin’s downtown in Leiper’s Fork.

There are a variety of events held in Franklin’s downtown area throughout the year. There are four stages of live music, carnival attractions, and food vendors at April’s Main Street Festival. You can find more music plus kid-friendly activities at October’s Pumpkinfest and the Victorian-themed Dickens of a Christmas in December. The biggest annual event is the Pilgrimage Music and Cultural Festival in September. Past performers include Jack White, Justin Timberlake, Chris Stapleton, Ryan Adams, Hall & Oates, Beck, Steven Tyler, and Willie Nelson. Live music performances are held each weekend as part of the Music in the Vines concert series at Arrington Vineyards, which is also open for wine tastings seven days a week. In addition, there is a year-round farmers’ market featuring more than 70 vendors each Saturday at The Factory.
